The Alligator Snapping Turtle at Flamingo Gardens got a new home. The Alligator Snapping Turtle is the largest freshwater Turtle in North America. Inside the mouth is a worm-like tongue, as the Alligator snapper lays submerged in the water he will flick the tongue out luring fish into his mouth. Then, he will chomp down with his very sharp beak. He is also equipped with powerful jaws that have as much pressure as an American Alligator’s. This gigantic, prehistoric looking beast weighs at least 150 pounds. Just ask Paul Anthony Kelly III who acquired his Eagle Rank by building this amazing reptile a new home.
Paul , 17, has been in the scouts for 12 years and will now receive the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America as an Eagle Scout. Only 2% of all scouts achieve this goal. At Flamingo Gardens there have been over one-hundred Eagle Scout projects that have been successfully completed.
When Paul began looking for a worthy project he knew that he wanted to do something that would contribute to wildlife preservation and the environment. He was inspired by Steve Irwin, the Crocodile hunter, whom he loved to watch and taught the importance of protecting, preserving and coexisting with all Wildlife.
The new habitat gives guests an up close look at this magnificent creature. The turtle has lived at Flamingo Gardens since 1992 when he was donated by Ocean World of Ft. Lauderdale when it shut down. The old habitat sustained major damage through hurricanes when it was crushed by the giant Sausage tree next to it.
Now located next to the River Otters, the new habitat consists of a 16' by 12' concrete pond that was constructed with donations by Van Kirk & Sons, Inc. Pools and Spa. A donation of the new habitat sign that provides information was provided by Ted Magill of Sunshine Airspares. Over 275 hours of time and hard work was also donated by family and the scouts of troop 128.
