NANNY STORY
We started our week off with a bang - how much more scenic can you get than the breathtaking views from Grouse mountain. Grinder and Coola, the two orphaned bears, have been frolicking in their enclosures on to p of this wintertime ski-resort for several years now - and were ready to show off for our camera as well. Devin, their caretaker, met us at the gondola so that we could shoot him heading to work in the morning - it's an 8 minute ride right up through the wilderness. We were even lucky enough to be able to film a deer just hanging out and enjoying the view - just below the arrival platform. We moved on right away to film the food preparation for the bears - and the public was impatiently waiting for Devin and his volunteer Nadine to tempt these late risers out of their hidden sleeping spot at the top of a knoll. Apples with honey do the trick - and Grinder and Coola were soon wrestling each other in front of the camera and putting on quite the show. Devin also demonstrated the emergency drill - something he performs every day. In case of fire or any other emergency, the bears are conditioned to follow a high pitched whistle into the „bear hotel", their winter habitat. It's a task they performed very well - even if they became a little TOO interested in Ankes „hairy" microphone at the end of the pole. Dr. Mcquisten, the bear's vet, and Devin showed us the bear surveillance system - this is used to monitor the bears during hibernation. The day came to a close with the beautiful sunset atop the mountain, with Vancouver glistening right below.
